  • Ensure the culture of the manufacturing cell centers on an understanding of the customers’ needs and that the production line is the focus of the dedicated resources.
  • Provide the direct leadership for the production lines and indirectly influence the other members of the manufacturing cell to ensure that the production lines are meeting or exceeding customers’ needs.
  • Ensure all productions lines are managed in a lean manner and employees understand and act accordingly.  Unless prohibited by a client, supervisors should specifically:
    • Maintain a visual production board that includes hourly goals, actual hourly results, and documentation of problems and scrap issues and the associated status or corrective action.  Any down time, set-up time, and shut down time should be captured so that the team can review and try and minimize these issues for the future.  Ensure this data is captured and trended for manufacturing metrics.
    • Communicate to Production Manager staffing requirements to meet customer demand.  Move within and across cells as needed.
    • Ensure that associates are provided with clear manufacturing instructions and standards of work to drive improvements in the quality of the products.
    • Ensure associates employ “5S” at their stations.
    • Demand cross training on each line and across lines.  Associates should be cross trained on each operation on their line.   Ensure a training matrix is posted and maintained.
    • Demand reductions in WIP quantities on the lines. Drive the organization towards continuous flow.
    • Work with the Manufacturing Engineer and Maintenance team to ensure equipment is maintained in a manner that maximizes equipment life and performance and minimizes impact to production.
    • Encourage the associates to aggressively act on line scrap.
  • Improve Quality.  Focus on product, process, and paperwork quality by incorporating the following activities:
    • Ensure that each associate understands their obligation to produce products that meet or exceed product specifications.
    • Ensure the production lines are compliant with all applicable Quality policies and regulations.
    • Ensure appropriate training requirements are maintained.
    • Assist with process improvements to increase product quality.
    • Track scrap, prioritize actions, and track results on a daily basis.
    • Encourage the timely and accurate completion of all paperwork associated with products.  Reward lines for first pass yield on appropriate paperwork, such as the lot DHR.
    • Support the Quality Engineer(s), Manufacturing Engineer(s) and Technician(s) as they respond to and solve customer complaints.
    • Allow the Quality Engineer(s) to present customer complaint data and actions to the production line associates
    • Provide the Quality organization with information to ensure that all raw material quality issues are being addressed with the appropriate vendor and that quality is improving.
  • Support efforts to manage material in a lean manner.  Specific actions include:
    • Ensure all associates are trained on the Visual Inventory Management system and comply with material movement procedures.
    • Notify Purchasing to make them aware of any unusual changes in material use.
    • Assist Production Manager by working with Purchasing to ensure that production is not effected by material issues.
  • Ensure that documentation (router) is ready before the lines transition to the next production build.
  • Assign associates to their work stations daily and assist them in their jobs as required. Ensure that associates are moved among operations to improve morale and minimize ergonomic issues.
  • Provide the appropriate data to the Production Manager so the right metrics are being created to ensure the organization is performing at the highest level.  Examples of metrics include:
    • Improvement in hourly production per person and reduction in scrap – daily and monthly (source for this metric is the hourly visual boards)
    • Reduction in direct labor as a percent of sales - monthly
    • Improvement of first pass yields on DHR accuracy – daily and monthly
