The Welding Engineer is responsible for defining, testing, and implementing welding technologies for XALT Energy battery cells and Freudenberg Battery Power Systems packs. This includes electrode cutting, electrode foil consolidation, electrode to tab joining, tab to busbar joining, and other various material joining of like metals, plastics, and composites.

Responsibilities
- Define and implement electrode foil consolidation for Cu and Al for high mechanical strength and low joint resistance as well as foils to tab joining for high mechanical strength and low joint resistance.
- Develop and implement laser shaping technology for electrode shaping in cell assembly.
- Define and implement electrode-to-tab, tab-to-tab, and tab-to-busbar joining technologies that ensure long life, low resistance rise.
- Advise Battery Pack engineering on joining methods and techniques for all interfaces.
- Define test methods and criteria for evaluating joint quality, including destructive and non-destructive techniques.
- Work with welding equipment suppliers to develop cost-efficient high volume production welding processes with our battery plant in Midland.
- Evaluate existing work processes and initiate practices to promote continuous improvement.
- Ensure Battery Pack mechanical design addresses key requirements for volume production like manufacturability, serviceability and recyclability.
- Ensure automation process design as well product design to manufacturing of welding technologies in high volume production equipment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or industrial engineering; Graduate studies or degree in Welding Engineering or Automation Engineering highly preferred.
- Advanced people skills and demonstrated ability to work with cross functional teams.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in welding technologies.
- Experience in Battery Cell Technologies and Battery Systems manufacturing is strongly preferred.
- Advanced knowledge and practical experiences with laser cutting and laser welding technologies of foils and bus bar materials in battery and pack manufacturing is strongly preferred.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications.
